The Portrayal of Jesus
Mark depicts Jesus as a man of action, Jesus was a man who had feelings as well as being a savior fulfilling his mission. Jesus is portrayed in different ways. This includes Jesus as a man, Son of God, Teacher, and Suffering Messiah.
Jesus as a man (Mark 1:12-13) In the passage; The Temptation of Jesus, we see Jesus as a human being. Jesus was out in the wilderness for 40 days. Although he is the son of God, he was tempted by Satan. Being tempted by Satan proves that Jesus is not only the son of God but a man as well. You would think that the son of God would have immunity to things such as being tempted but that isn't so. Him being tempted shows that he is one of us, human. Jesus the Son of God (Mark 1:40-45) Jesus is presented as the son of God in the passage: Jesus cleanses a Leaper. It is apparent that he is the Son of God because he performs a miracle on a man with leprosy. This man came to Jesus and begged him to heal him. In pity, Jesus stretched his arm out and healed him. Jesus told the man not to tell everyone, but the man did. Everyone heard about this and didn't leave Jesus alone. He stayed in the country. Jesus as a Teacher (Mark 10:1-12) Jesus is displayed as a teacher in the parable: Teaching about Divorce. Some Pharisees came and asked Jesus “it is lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” Jesus said that God made male and female. A man leaves his parents to be with his wife and together they become one. When they become one, they are joined together by God and should not separate. If the man divorces his wife and marries another, he is committing adultery and if the woman marries another, vice versa. Suffering Messiah (Mark 15:21-32) We see him as a Suffering Messiah in the passage: The Crucifixion of Jesus. This is because Simon of Cyrene carried his cross. Jesus was crucified at 9o’clock in the morning. There were two robbers were crucified besides him. People came by and mocked him saying “you saved others but you can’t save yourself” |
