The Gospel of Mark
The Synoptic Gospels are summaries of the life and teachings of Jesus which consists of Matthew, Mark and Luke. These gospels are very similar due to the fact that almost 90 percent of Marks gospel can be found in Matthew and about half of it in Luke. There are parts of Matthew and Luke are completely identical. It is believed by many scholars that Marks gospel was the first gospel written and that Matthew and Luke used Mark as a source. Yet there is material from Matthew and Luke that is identical. Other Scholars say Matthew and Mark had access to another document which had been given the name Q Source. The Q stands for the German word Quelle.
The Gospels were not written during the life of Jesus. Jesus’ life, death and resurrection took place between approximately 4BC and 30AD. The writing of the gospels occurred during the second half of the first century in Rome. The exact date is unknown although many historians debate that it began between 50-67AD. It is said that Marks gospel was originally written in Greek since Greek was spoken in Rome.
It is believed that the Gospel of Mark is based on the eye witness account and preaching’s of St Peter, that eye witness being John Mark. John Mark was a close friend of Peter. He was able to see and hear the preaching’s and teachings of Peter whom was taught by Jesus. St Peter was a firsthand witness of Jesus and teachings. John Mark then recorded what St Peter had told him to compress it all into the gospel of Mark.
