The themes displayed throughout the gospel of Mark include discipleship, miracle stories, and the kingdom of God.
Discipleship
There are 6 stories of discipleship within Mark. The word disciple refers to someone who learns from a master who then will go off and continue his work and teachings. Meaning anyone who is a believer of Christ and seeks to follow his way is a disciple. In Mark's gospel, true discipleship involves 3 things which are servant hood, suffering and death. In this gospel Jesus' disciples are presented as failures and often misunderstood. This is to give the audience a more realistic and genuine example. Discipleship offers the readers reassurance that they are following the way to the cross.
Miracle Stories
A total of 8 healing miracle stories are accounted for in Mark as well as 4 miracles that are non-healing. These non-healing miracles are referred to as nature miracles since they are depict Jesus' power over the laws of nature. These vivid stories show Jesus' power over sickness and sin. The first chapter records 3 miracles; casting out of the unclean spirit, the cure of Peters mother on law, and the healing of a leaper. Marks writing is unique in its own way, he pays special attention to the feelings and emotions of Jesus and the effects the miracles have on a crowd.
Kingdom of God
Kingdom of God gave hope to those who were persecuted as it meant God is alive in those who believe. The power of the kingdom over evil and sin is shown through Jesus' words and miracles.
